Seagrass
Cymodoceaceae
Cymodocea rotundata Ascherson & Schweinfurth, 1870
Common name(s): Smooth ribbon seagrass.
Chinese name(s): 圆叶丝粉草.
Classification: Liliopsida > Alismatales >
Cymodoceaceae.
Environment: Depth range 0-10 m.
Morphology: Shoots consist of a cluster of 2-3 linear leaves, emerging from an elongated leaf sheath attached
to a vertical stem. Leaf tips are rounded and smooth. When leaves are shed, they leave scars that completely encircle the vertical stem (closed scars).
Life history strategy: Opportunistic.
IUCN Red List status: Least Concern.
Population trend: Stable.
Human use(s): Provides habitats for exploited fish and invertebrates.
Biology: Grows on fine sand or coral rubble and can be found on coral reef flats and sandy plains along the coastline. Has separate male and female plants. Seeds are hard-coated and dark-colored, measuring up to 10 mm in length.
Cymodoceaceae
Common name(s): Serrated ribbon seagrass.
Chinese name(s): 齿叶丝粉草.
Classification: Liliopsida > Alismatales >
Cymodoceaceae.
Environment: Depth range 0-25 m.
Morphology: Shoots consist of a cluster of 2-4 curved leaves, emerging from a flattened triangular leaf sheath attached to a vertical stem. Leaf tips are rounded with minute serrations. When leaves are shed, they leave scars that do not completely encircle the vertical stem (open scars). Leaves sometimes have red stripes but are most often uniformly green. Synonyms are Oceana serrulata(R. Br.)
Life history strategy: Opportunistic.
IUCN Red List status: Least Concern.
Population trend: Stable.
Human use(s): Provides habitats for exploited fish and invertebrates.
Biology: Grows on fine sand or coral rubble and can be frequently found on coral reef flats and sandy plains seaward of coral reefs (forereefs). Has separate male and female plants. Seeds are dark-colored, measuring 5-10 mm in length. Seeds are hard-coated and can form seed banks, making it possible for this species to recover relatively fast after disturbance.
Distribution: Indo-Pacific.
Cymodoceaceae
Halodule pinifolia (Miki) Hartog, 1964
Common name(s): Needle seagrass.
Chinese name(s): 羽叶二药草.
Classification: Liliopsida > Alismatales >
Cymodoceaceae.
Environment: Depth range 0-7 m.
Morphology: Shoots consist of 2-4 linear leaves, not more than 1.5 mm wide. Leaf tips are obtuse with irregular serrations. Young leaf tips are rounded;mature leaf tips have a bifurcate midrib at the apex and are irregularly serrated. Some researchers consider this species to be a variant of H. uninervis.
Biology: Occur in sheltered and semi-exposed bays, coral reef platforms, pools, also in wave-beaten sites.Seeds are hard-coated and white-colored, measuring less than 2 mm in diameter.
Distribution: Indo-Pacific.
